This is a question that my 12 year old asked me while we sat in the huge waiting area of the Royal Children’s hospital. We found ourselves there after a particularly awkward fall at school soccer that had left him with a suspected torsion of the testes (yes, ouch!).
Because his history and presentation gave a sense of urgency, we were immediately triaged to the front of the queue. This was not the case for the approximately 60 people waiting in this room. They had just heard the announcement from the obviously harried and tired head doctor of emergency, that there was currently a 5 hour wait for non-urgent emergencies!
The room was full of children and babies with every possible combination of cough, cold, ear, nose and throat complaint. They were feverish, lethargic, runny nosed or whinging. They were also very tired and irritable and obviously frustrated. Many had been given analgesics or airway altering medication. Many had been in and out of emergency many times over several days. In the time we waited, we watched many of these children be fed vending machine food and/or fast foods (available from the onsite international fast food chain that is part of the hospital).
Amidst all this, my son, possibly sensing my despair at what I was witnessing, asked me, “Mum, why don’t these people know about Chiropractic?” I was floored by the clarity he demonstrated.
The presupposition in his question was that he could see in so many of these children the possibility for greater health. He inherently knew that so many of the children’s ailments were either symptoms of a greater lack of understanding of how the body functions, or the demonstration of a system that was subluxated. He was really asking why these people did not know what he knew about his body?
My son’s question gave me cause to question my resolve to educate. We are often surrounded by those who DO understand how their bodies work and the innate brilliance and potential to heal that it holds. It is easy to forget the responsibility we have to share this. It is so vital that we share this information at every opportunity. We need to be bold and go where the health challenges are, and see where we can educate. Imagine if even a small percentage of those children could be assisted by Chiropractic or the knowledge of health. Imagine the ripple effect and how their lives would change. Their parents would be happier and less pressured, the staff in the hospital would be less stressed and overworked, the community would have less financial (health) strain, and the world would generally become a better place.
THE BIG IDEA
A slip on the snowy sidewalk in winter is a small thing. It happens to millions.
A fall from a ladder in the summer is a small thing. It also happens to millions.
The slip or fall produces a subluxation. The subluxation is a small thing.
The subluxation produces pressure on a nerve. That pressure is a small thing.
The pressure cuts off the flow of mental impulses. That decreased flowing is a small thing.
That decreased flowing produces a dis-eased body and brain. That is a big thing to that man.
Multiply that sick man by a thousand, and you control the physical and mental welfare of a city.
Multiply that sick man by a million and you shape the physical and mental destiny of a state.
Multiply that sick man by one hundred thirty million and you can prophesy the physical and mental status of a nation.
So the slip or fall, the subluxation, pressure, flow of mental images and dis-ease are big enough to control the thoughts and actions of a nation.
Now comes a man. And one man is a small thing.
This man gives an adjustment. The adjustment is a small thing.
The adjustment replaces the subluxation. That is a small thing.
The adjusted subluxation releases pressure upon nerves. That is a small thing.
The released pressure restores health to a man. This is a big thing to that man.
Multiply that well man by a thousand and you step up the physical and mental welfare of a city.
Multiply that well man by a million, and you increase the efficiency of a state.
Multiply that well man by one hundred and thirty million and you have produced a healthy, wealthy, and better race for posterity.
So, the adjustment of the subluxation, to release pressure upon nerves, to restore mental impulse flow, to restore health, is big enough to rebuild the thoughts and actions of the world.
The idea that knows the cause, that can correct the cause of dis-ease, is one of the biggest ideas known. Without it, nations fall; with it, nations rise. The idea is the biggest I know of.

So when my son asked me, I answered him by saying that they did not know about Chiropractic because no one had told them, or not told them enough. I shared with him the responsibility that comes with our gift of knowledge and I also thanked him for the reminder to never stop being bold and telling the story.
We left after an hour with a reassurance that no intervention was required. Those waiting were told as we left that the new revised wait time was now 6 hours minimum.
