The short answer, as William Johnston said, is “If it is to be, it’s up to me”.
So responsibility starts with me and ends with me whether I’m a CA or DC.
To quote the remarkable Stephen Covey, “We are responsible for our own lives”.
It’s amazing how some people sit around in practice and wait for things to happen, creating those long, long, long, slow days.
Seeing new clients come through the door and hearing the telephone ring will NOT occur until I take responsibility and this does take courage.
Einstein was right, “Nothing happens until something moves”.
I believe that to create change and build the practice or life we desire, it is essential to embrace the “Above and Below The Line” concept. We have a choice to function above or below the line.
Below the line is where we use EXCUSES, BLAME, DENIAL and REASONS.
“Oh the Global Financial Crisis means people don’t have money for Chiropractic”; “The rain today will keep people away”.
When below the line, a lot of SHOULDS fall on your head! Look up and you will see the SHOULDS raining down, drowning and overwhelming you when you are BELOW THE LINE.
I should get to work earlier – EXCUSE – I need more sleep.
I should do Health Care Classes – EXCUSE – I’m scared of Public Speaking.
I should exercise more – these are classic EXCUSES … It’s too hot, It’s too cold, It’s too perfect!
I SHOULD I SHOULD I SHOULD
Yuck! Feel the uncomfortableness when covered in SHOULDS.
It is energy depleting and draining, even all consuming.
This is life and practice when you are operating BELOW THE LINE.
You have the choice to shake off the shoulds and step ABOVE THE LINE. Shake your head, clear it out, blow the shoulds away, stand up if you like and start again.
Here is a summary of the Above and Below the Line concept.
ABOVE & BELOW THE LINE
Above the line is being a VICTOR and must involve – ACCOUNTABILITY
Productive and Energy Producing
Below the line is being a VICTIM and involves
Consuming and Energy Depleting
The “Above and Below The Line” concept is not negotiable. It is 100% essential for a team to function at its peak and that needs to be your aim. If you find another team member functioning Below The Line, please pro-actively help them to get Above The Line. This is extremely important. You can even implement this as a team policy.
We always have the opportunity for a fresh start. To quote Gilles Lamarche, “Today I choose to show up as the best version of me”.
Moving into the daylight (or you may even wish to call it White Light), ‘Above the Line’ is where we can be PRODUCTIVE and ENERGY PRODUCING. This is empowering and when we take OWNERSHIP and are RESPONSIBLE, then we achieve RESULTS.
Above the line we take action and become a VICTOR who is ACCOUNTABLE for our actions, our life and our practice.
In Stephen Covey’s powerful teachings he said “Accountability breeds Response-Ability”.
One of my favourite teachings of our developer Bartlett Joshua Palmer (BJ) is the LADDER OF SUCCESS.
Here BJ teaches us to step up each rung of the ladder to succeed.
100% I DID
90% I WILL
80% I CAN
70% I THINK I CAN
60% I MIGHT
50% I THINK I MIGHT
40% WHAT IS IT?
30% I WISH I COULD
20% I DON’T KNOW HOW
10% I CAN’T
0% I WON’T
RESPONSIBILITY is so entrenched in our Chiropractic History, DCs went to jail for Chiropractic. THEY took responsibility.
If we are true to ourselves and our forefathers and future generations, we MUST step up the ladder, one rung or maybe several at a time and act ABOVE THE LINE whether you are a CA or DC.
“Where does responsibility begin and end?” If we answer “It begins with ME and ends with ME”, this is not actually the end because responsibility never ends.
